How to Measure for an Arched Rod

Arched metal curtain rods are a great way to hang curtains over an arched window or on a curved wall. A custom curtain rod can be shaped to your specific window or wall.

If you have a symmetrical arched space, you can take some simple measurements to provide your custom curtain rod fabricator. First, find the location of the ends of the rod. Use a tape measure as a straight edge between the two ends. Write down the length between the two ends. Next, locate the center of this length which is half the number you just wrote down. Last, measure the width between this center point and your wall (for a rod to hang horizontally) or the top of the window (for a rod to hang vertically). Write this number down.

For arches or curves that are not symmetrical, the easiest way to get a custom curtain rod is to make a template. Use a piece of paper that is larger than your rod and draw the shape of your wall or window. The fabricator can make the appropriate subtractions and make your rod to fit perfectly. Standard brackets can be used in most cases. You might want to order center brackets or ceiling brackets depending on your space.

For arched rods that are going to hang over an arched window, you can have rings welded onto the rod so that they don’t fall down the arch. The last step is to choose finials, brackets, wands and holdbacks if needed.
