The basic components of a curtain rod and all you truly need are the rod and the brackets. The brackets attach to the wall or ceiling or window or casing and the rod sits in the brackets. There are many styles and sizes of rods. Some of the different kinds of brackets are standard wall brackets, ceiling brackets, center brackets, end mount brackets and double brackets. Which bracket you use depends on what you’re hanging and what you are attaching it to.
There are many additional hardware items you can use in order to make your rod more original and beautiful. First, there are finials which attach to the ends of the rods. You can have finials on both ends of the rod or just one end. Finials come in millions of styles, shapes, sizes and finishes. Rings are also very useful when hanging curtains. Rings are usually round but can be different shapes as well. Drapery rings go around the rod and attach to the curtains. They enable the curtains to move along with rod. Holdbacks are another piece of hardware that can decorate your rod and hardware. Holdbacks can come in stem or hook style and usually hold your curtains back from the window. They can also be used to hang curtains. The last hardware item to note is the drapery wand. Wands attach to a ring or a hook and pull the curtains along the rod, whether to open or close.
